Partial differential equations Definition
Similarity solution
Definition
Let and consider a partial differential equation for a function . Let , and for put . Assume that the equation is invariant under these scalings: if is a solution, then so is for every . A solution is a similarity solution, or self-similar solution, with exponents if for every .
Remarks
Taking shows that is self-similar exactly when for a function on , namely . Substituting this form turns the equation into an equation for in the variable .
Example: the heat equation is invariant for and every . The heat kernel is self-similar with , . Check: .
Non-example: solves for , but it is not self-similar. A self-similar solution would have zero set at time , with the zero set of . But the zero set of is for every . At this forces , and then at the zero set would be .
For a scalar conservation law , the scalings with , are symmetries. The corresponding similarity solutions include the rarefaction waves and the solutions of the Riemann problem.
