Definition
Let be an algebra with universe . Let and . The algebra is simple when has at least two elements and its only congruences are and .
Remarks
Equivalently, the congruence lattice of is the two-element chain. By the correspondence theorem, a quotient is simple exactly when is a maximal element of .
Example: the group with prime is simple. Its congruences come from its subgroups, and by Lagrange's theorem these are only and .
Non-example: the ring is not simple. Congruence modulo is a congruence, and it is neither , since belongs to it, nor , since does not.
A field, viewed as a ring, is simple, since its only ideals are and the whole field. The one-element algebra is excluded, because there .
