Simple ring

Builds on RingTwo-sided ideal

Definition

Let RR be a ring with 11. The ring RR is simple if R≠0R \ne 0 and the only two-sided ideals of RR are 00 and RR.

Remarks

Example: let FF be a field and R=M2(F)R = M_2(F). Let II be a nonzero two-sided ideal and A∈IA \in I with an entry aij≠0a_{ij} \ne 0. With the matrix units EklE_{kl}, one has EkiAEjl=aijEklE_{ki} A E_{jl} = a_{ij} E_{kl}, so every EklE_{kl} lies in II, hence I=RI = R.

Non-example: ℤ\Z is not simple, since 2ℤ2\Z is a two-sided ideal different from 00 and ℤ\Z.

A commutative ring is simple if and only if it is a field. A simple ring need not be Artinian: the Weyl algebra over a field of characteristic 00 is simple and has no zero divisors, but it is not a division ring. The center of a simple ring is a field. Some authors require a simple ring to be Artinian as well; here no such condition is imposed.
