Statement

Let KK and LL be simplicial complexes with KK finite, and let ∣K∣\abs{K} and ∣L∣\abs{L} be their geometric realizations. For a point y∈∣L∣y \in \abs{L}, let supp⁡(y)\operatorname{supp}(y) be the smallest closed simplex of ∣L∣\abs{L} that contains yy. A simplicial map g ⁣:K→Lg \colon K \to L is a simplicial approximation of a continuous map f ⁣:∣K∣→∣L∣f \colon \abs{K} \to \abs{L} if ∣g∣(x)∈supp⁡(f(x))\abs{g}(x) \in \operatorname{supp}(f(x)) for every x∈∣K∣x \in \abs{K}. Let f ⁣:∣K∣→∣L∣f \colon \abs{K} \to \abs{L} be continuous. Let sd⁡mK\operatorname{sd}^m K be the mm-fold barycentric subdivision of KK, so that ∣sd⁡mK∣=∣K∣\abs{\operatorname{sd}^m K} = \abs{K}. Then there are an integer m≥0m \ge 0 and a simplicial map g ⁣:sd⁡mK→Lg \colon \operatorname{sd}^m K \to L that is a simplicial approximation of ff.

Remarks

A vertex map gg is a simplicial approximation of ff as soon as f(st⁡v)⊆st⁡g(v)f(\operatorname{st} v) \subseteq \operatorname{st} g(v) for every vertex vv, where st⁡\operatorname{st} denotes the open star. The open stars of the vertices of LL form an open cover of ∣L∣\abs{L}, so their preimages under ff form an open cover of the compact metric space ∣K∣\abs{K}. Repeated barycentric subdivision makes the simplices smaller than a Lebesgue number of this cover. Then each open star of sd⁡mK\operatorname{sd}^m K maps into some open star of LL, and choosing such a vertex for each vv gives gg.

A simplicial approximation gg of ff is homotopic to ff by the straight-line homotopy, which stays in supp⁡(f(x))\operatorname{supp}(f(x)).

Subdivision is necessary. Let K=LK = L be the boundary of a triangle, so ∣K∣\abs{K} is a circle, and let ff wrap this circle twice around itself. A simplicial map K→LK \to L is either a bijection on vertices, of degree ±1\pm 1, or misses a vertex, of degree 00. Since a simplicial approximation is homotopic to ff, which has degree 22, no simplicial map K→LK \to L approximates ff.

For a student

Simplicial approximation shows that the set of homotopy classes of maps ∣K∣→∣L∣\abs{K} \to \abs{L} is countable when KK and LL are finite. It is used to prove that simplicial homology is a homotopy invariant and agrees with singular homology, and to compute πk(Sn)=0\pi_k(S^n) = 0 for k<nk < n. The analogue for CW complexes is the cellular approximation theorem.
