Definition

Let XX be a topological space, let GG be an abelian group, and let C∙(X)C_\bullet(X) be the singular chain complex of XX with integer coefficients. The group of singular nn-cochains is Cn(X;G)=Hom⁡(Cn(X),G)C^n(X; G) = \Hom(C_n(X), G), that is, the group of all functions from singular nn-simplices of XX to GG. The coboundary δ ⁣:Cn(X;G)→Cn+1(X;G)\delta \colon C^n(X; G) \to C^{n+1}(X; G) is δφ=φ∘∂n+1\delta \varphi = \varphi \circ \partial_{n+1}. Then δ∘δ=0\delta \circ \delta = 0. The singular cohomology group Hn(X;G)H^n(X; G) is ker⁡(δ ⁣:Cn→Cn+1)/im⁡(δ ⁣:Cn−1→Cn)\ker(\delta \colon C^n \to C^{n+1}) / \im(\delta \colon C^{n-1} \to C^n). For a subspace A⊆XA \subseteq X, the relative group Hn(X,A;G)H^n(X, A; G) is defined in the same way from Hom⁡(Cn(X,A),G)\Hom(C_n(X, A), G). These are the cochains that vanish on all simplices in AA.

Remarks

A continuous map f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y induces f∗ ⁣:Hn(Y;G)→Hn(X;G)f^* \colon H^n(Y; G) \to H^n(X; G), so Hn(−;G)H^n(-; G) is a contravariant functor; compare the Hom functor. Evaluation ⟨φ,c⟩=φ(c)\langle \varphi, c \rangle = \varphi(c) of a cochain on a chain gives the Kronecker pairing Hn(X;G)×Hn(X)→GH^n(X; G) \times H_n(X) \to G. The universal coefficient theorem gives a split exact sequence 0→Ext⁡(Hn−1(X),G)→Hn(X;G)→Hom⁡(Hn(X),G)→00 \to \operatorname{Ext}(H_{n-1}(X), G) \to H^n(X; G) \to \Hom(H_n(X), G) \to 0, with Ext the Ext functor and HnH_n singular homology. When G=ℤG = \Z one writes Hn(X)H^n(X).

Example: a 00-cochain φ\varphi is a function from points of XX to GG, and (δφ)(σ)=φ(σ(1))−φ(σ(0))(\delta \varphi)(\sigma) = \varphi(\sigma(1)) - \varphi(\sigma(0)) for a path σ\sigma. So φ\varphi is a cocycle exactly when it is constant on each path component. Hence H0(X;G)H^0(X; G) is the group of functions from the set of path components of XX to GG.

Non-example: on X=[0,1]X = [0, 1] the 00-cochain φ(x)=x\varphi(x) = x with G=ℝG = \R is not a cocycle, because δφ\delta\varphi takes the value 11 on the path t↦tt \mapsto t.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
