Singular perturbation
Builds on Ordinary differential equationBoundary value problem
Definition
Let be a set and let . For each , let be a problem on , such as a boundary value problem for an ordinary differential equation. Assume that the data of have a limit as . The problem is the reduced problem. Let be a solution of . The family is a regular perturbation of if has a solution and uniformly on as . The family is a singular perturbation if it is not a regular perturbation. This means that has no solution, or that does not converge uniformly on to a solution of .
Remarks
Example: is on with and . The solution is . The reduced problem , , has no solution. Indeed for each while , so the convergence is not uniform.
Non-example: on with . The solution converges uniformly to , the solution of the reduced problem, so the perturbation is regular.
A small parameter multiplying the highest derivative usually makes the problem singular. Singular problems are treated by the method of matched asymptotic expansions and the method of multiple scales.
