Definition
Let be a germ of a holomorphic function with . The point is a singular point of if it is a critical point, that is, if for . Two such germs and are right equivalent if for a germ of a biholomorphic map. Singularity theory studies singular germs of functions, maps and varieties up to such equivalences, and their invariants.
Remarks
The same definitions apply to real smooth germs, with diffeomorphisms in place of biholomorphic maps. Example: has a singular point at , since both partial derivatives vanish there. It is right equivalent to via , since . Non-example: has at , so is not a singular point. By the holomorphic Morse lemma, every germ with a nondegenerate critical point at is right equivalent to . An isolated singularity has a finite Milnor number , which is invariant under right equivalence.
