Definition

Let MM be a topological manifold of dimension nn, so MM is Hausdorff, second countable and locally homeomorphic to ℝn\R^n. A chart on MM is a pair (U,φ)(U, \varphi) where U⊂MU \subset M is open and φ ⁣:U→φ(U)\varphi \colon U \to \varphi(U) is a homeomorphism onto an open subset of ℝn\R^n. Two charts (U,φ)(U, \varphi) and (V,ψ)(V, \psi) are smoothly compatible if U∩V=∅U \cap V = \emptyset or the transition map ψ∘φ−1 ⁣:φ(U∩V)→ψ(U∩V)\psi \circ \varphi^{-1} \colon \varphi(U \cap V) \to \psi(U \cap V) is a smooth (C∞C^\infty) map with smooth inverse. A smooth atlas on MM is a family of pairwise smoothly compatible charts whose domains cover MM. A smooth structure is a smooth atlas that is maximal: it contains every chart that is smoothly compatible with all of its charts. A smooth manifold of dimension nn is a topological manifold of dimension nn together with a smooth structure.

Remarks

The unit circle S1⊂ℝ2S^1 \subset \R^2 is a smooth manifold. Let N=(0,1)N = (0, 1) and S=(0,−1)S = (0, -1), and let σN ⁣:S1∖{N}→ℝ\sigma_N \colon S^1 \setminus \set{N} \to \R and σS ⁣:S1∖{S}→ℝ\sigma_S \colon S^1 \setminus \set{S} \to \R be the stereographic projections, σN(x,y)=x/(1−y)\sigma_N(x, y) = x/(1 - y) and σS(x,y)=x/(1+y)\sigma_S(x, y) = x/(1 + y). On the overlap, σNσS=x2/(1−y2)=1\sigma_N \sigma_S = x^2/(1 - y^2) = 1, so the transition map is t↦1/tt \mapsto 1/t on ℝ∖{0}\R \setminus \set{0}, which is smooth with smooth inverse.

The charts (ℝ,id⁡)(\R, \id) and (ℝ,t↦t3)(\R, t \mapsto t^3) on ℝ\R are not smoothly compatible. The transition map t↦t1/3t \mapsto t^{1/3} is not differentiable at 00. Each of them alone defines a smooth structure on ℝ\R, and the two structures are different, although the resulting manifolds are diffeomorphic.

Every smooth atlas is contained in a unique maximal one, so in practice a smooth manifold is given by any smooth atlas. Replacing C∞C^\infty by CkC^k gives CkC^k manifolds.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
