Sobolev embedding theorem
Builds on Lp spaceHölder continuity
Statement
Let and . Let be the Sobolev space of functions whose first weak derivatives lie in .
- If , let . There is a constant such that for all . So embeds continuously in the Lp space .
- If , let . Each agrees almost everywhere with a bounded function that is Hölder continuous with exponent . Its supremum norm and Hölder constant are at most .
Remarks
Part 1 is the Gagliardo–Nirenberg–Sobolev inequality, and part 2 is Morrey's inequality. For , the space also embeds in for every between and , by interpolation.
The exponent is forced by scaling. For , one has and . The inequality of part 1 can hold for all only if , that is .
For , functions in need not be bounded. On the ball in , the function is in but unbounded near .

For a student
Sobolev embeddings are the main tool to get regularity of weak solutions of partial differential equations. One first finds a solution in a Sobolev space by energy methods, then uses embeddings to show that it is continuous or smooth. On bounded domains with regular boundary the same embeddings hold, and the Rellich–Kondrachov theorem makes them compact for .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
