Sobolev space
Builds on Weak derivativeLp space
Definition
Let be open, let be an integer and let . The Sobolev space is the set of functions with the following property. For every multi-index with , the weak derivative exists and lies in . Its norm is The space is the closure in of the space of test functions.
Remarks
Here is the Lp space, and functions equal almost everywhere are identified. Each is a Banach space, and is a Hilbert space with inner product . For one gets . For , the smooth functions in are dense in it (Meyers–Serrin).
Example: lies in for all . Indeed is bounded, and its weak derivative is bounded, so both lie in every .
Non-example: is bounded, so it lies in every , but it has no weak derivative on . So it is in no space .
