Definition
Let be a ring and let be a left module over . The socle of , written , is the sum of all simple submodules of . If has no simple submodule, then .
Remarks
Example: let as a -module. A submodule is simple exactly when it has prime order, so the simple submodules are and , of orders and . Their sum is , so .
Non-example of a nonzero socle: the -module has socle . Each nonzero submodule contains the proper nonzero submodule , so no submodule of is simple.
The socle is a semisimple module, and it contains every semisimple submodule of . It also equals the intersection of all essential submodules of . The socle of the left module is a two-sided ideal of .
