Mechanics of deformable solids Foundations of continuum mechanics Concept
Solid mechanics
Summary
Solid mechanics is the branch of continuum mechanics that studies solid bodies: how they deform, carry loads, vibrate and break. A solid, unlike a fluid, has a preferred shape, so its stress depends on how far it is deformed from a reference configuration. Its main theories are elasticity, plasticity and viscoelasticity, and it underlies structural, mechanical and materials engineering.
