Solutions of a nonhomogeneous polynomial operator equation

Builds on Kernel of a linear map

Statement

Let VV be a vector space of functions (for example, of sequences), and let AA be a linear operator on VV. Let p(A)=c0Ak+c1Ak−1+⋯+ckp(A) = c_0 A^k + c_1 A^{k-1} + \dots + c_k be a polynomial in AA with c0≠0c_0 \ne 0 and ck≠0c_k \ne 0. Let g∈Vg \in V, and let WW be the set of all f∈Vf \in V with p(A)f=0p(A) f = 0. Suppose f0∈Vf_0 \in V satisfies p(A)f0=gp(A) f_0 = g. Then every f∈Vf \in V with p(A)f=gp(A) f = g can be written as f=f0+f1f = f_0 + f_1 with f1∈Wf_1 \in W.

Remarks

Proof: the operator p(A)p(A) is linear, so p(A)(f−f0)=g−g=0p(A)(f - f_0) = g - g = 0. Put f1=f−f0f_1 = f - f_0. The set WW is the kernel of p(A)p(A), and so a subspace of VV. The conditions c0≠0c_0 \ne 0 and ck≠0c_k \ne 0 are not used in this argument. Example: for un+1−2un=1u_{n+1} - 2u_n = 1, the constant −1-1 is one solution, and WW is spanned by 2n2^n.
