Definition
Let be a connected real or complex Lie group. Its derived series is and for , where is the subgroup generated by the commutators with . The group is a solvable Lie group if for some , that is, if is a solvable group.
Remarks
A connected Lie group is solvable if and only if its Lie algebra is a solvable Lie algebra, that is, its derived series reaches .
Example: the group of affine maps of with and , written , with . It is connected, being homeomorphic to . The commutator of and is , and every commutator has first entry , so is the abelian group of translations . Then , and is solvable.
Non-example: . Its Lie algebra satisfies , since the basis elements with , , are all brackets. So the derived series of the Lie algebra never reaches , and is not solvable.
