Definition

Let GG be a connected solvable Lie group and let HH be a closed subgroup of GG. The homogeneous space G/HG/H, with its manifold structure as a quotient of Lie groups, is a solvmanifold. Equivalently, a solvmanifold is a manifold with a smooth transitive action of a connected solvable Lie group.

Remarks

Example: GG the group of maps x↦ax+bx \mapsto ax + b of ℝ\R with a>0a > 0 and b∈ℝb \in \R. It is solvable, since its commutator subgroup lies in the abelian group of translations. It acts transitively on ℝ\R, and the stabilizer of 00 is the closed subgroup H={x↦ax}H = \set{x \mapsto ax}. So ℝ≅G/H\R \cong G/H is a solvmanifold.

Non-example: the presentation S2=SO(3)/SO(2)S^2 = \mathrm{SO}(3)/\mathrm{SO}(2) does not show that S2S^2 is a solvmanifold, because SO(3)\mathrm{SO}(3) is not solvable: its Lie algebra 𝔰𝔬(3)\mathfrak{so}(3) is simple.

Many authors call only the compact quotients G/ΓG/\Gamma by a discrete subgroup Γ\Gamma solvmanifolds. Each nilmanifold is a solvmanifold, since nilpotent groups are solvable.
