Sommerfeld expansion

Builds on Fermi–Dirac statisticsRiemann zeta function

Statement

Let μ∈ℝ\mu \in \R, and let fT(ε)=1/(e(ε−μ)/kBT+1)f_T(\varepsilon) = 1/(e^{(\varepsilon - \mu)/k_B T} + 1) be the Fermi–Dirac distribution at temperature T>0T > 0. Let H ⁣:ℝ→ℝH \colon \R \to \R be continuous, vanish for ε<ε0\varepsilon < \varepsilon_0 for some ε0<μ\varepsilon_0 < \mu, grow at most polynomially as ε→∞\varepsilon \to \infty, and be infinitely differentiable near μ\mu. Let ζ\zeta be the Riemann zeta function. Then for every integer M≥1M \ge 1, as T→0T \to 0, ∫−∞∞H(ε)fT(ε) dε=∫−∞μH(ε) dε+∑n=1M2(1−21−2n)ζ(2n) (kBT)2nH(2n−1)(μ)+O ⁣((kBT)2M+2).\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} H(\varepsilon) f_T(\varepsilon) \, d\varepsilon = \int_{-\infty}^{\mu} H(\varepsilon) \, d\varepsilon + \sum_{n=1}^{M} 2 \left(1 - 2^{1 - 2n}\right) \zeta(2n) \, (k_B T)^{2n} H^{(2n-1)}(\mu) + O\!\left((k_B T)^{2M+2}\right). The first two correction terms are π26(kBT)2H′(μ)+7π4360(kBT)4H′′′(μ).\frac{\pi^2}{6} (k_B T)^2 H'(\mu) + \frac{7 \pi^4}{360} (k_B T)^4 H'''(\mu).

Remarks

Integrate by parts with K(ε)=∫−∞εHK(\varepsilon) = \int_{-\infty}^{\varepsilon} H to get ∫K(ε) (−fT′(ε)) dε\int K(\varepsilon) \, (-f_T'(\varepsilon)) \, d\varepsilon. The weight −fT′-f_T' is an even bump around μ\mu of width about kBTk_B T and total mass 11, so Taylor expanding KK at μ\mu leaves only even moments. These moments are ∫ℝx2nex(ex+1)2 dx=2(1−21−2n)(2n)! ζ(2n)\int_{\R} x^{2n} \frac{e^x}{(e^x + 1)^2} \, dx = 2 (1 - 2^{1-2n}) (2n)! \, \zeta(2n) after the scaling x=(ε−μ)/kBTx = (\varepsilon - \mu)/k_B T; the parts of the integral far from μ\mu are exponentially small. The series is asymptotic and need not converge.

Example: for the free electron gas, take H(ε)=g(ε)H(\varepsilon) = g(\varepsilon), the density of states. Keeping the first correction gives the chemical potential μ(T)≈EF(1−π212(kBT/EF)2)\mu(T) \approx E_F \left(1 - \frac{\pi^2}{12} (k_B T / E_F)^2\right) and the electronic heat capacity C≈π22NkB kBTEFC \approx \frac{\pi^2}{2} N k_B \, \frac{k_B T}{E_F}, linear in TT.

Going deeper

For a student

The expansion is the standard tool for the degenerate Fermi gas at kBT≪EFk_B T \ll E_F. One applies it twice: once to the particle number, to find μ(T)\mu(T), and once to the energy, to find the heat capacity. The coefficients π2/6\pi^2/6 and 7π4/3607\pi^4/360 are 2η(2)2\eta(2) and 2η(4)2\eta(4), where η(s)=(1−21−s)ζ(s)\eta(s) = (1 - 2^{1-s}) \zeta(s) is the Dirichlet eta function. The first correction is usually enough, unless HH varies strongly on the scale kBTk_B T around μ\mu.
