Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let KK be a real number. A space form of curvature KK is a Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M, g) of dimension nn such that:

  1. MM is connected.
  2. MM is complete as a metric space for the Riemannian distance.
  3. The sectional curvature of every 2-plane at every point of MM equals KK.

Remarks

Example: the flat torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2 / \Z^2 with the metric induced from ℝ2\R^2 is connected and compact, hence complete, and its sectional curvature is 00 everywhere. So it is a space form of curvature 00.

Non-example: the open unit disc in ℝ2\R^2 with the Euclidean metric is connected and flat, but the Cauchy sequence (1−1/k,0)(1 - 1/k, 0) has no limit in the disc. It fails clause 2.

The simply connected space forms are the sphere of radius 1/K1/\sqrt{K} for K>0K > 0, Euclidean space ℝn\R^n for K=0K = 0, and hyperbolic space of curvature KK for K<0K < 0. Some authors call only these three models space forms.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
