Definition

Let a<ba < b be real numbers. The space of functions of bounded variation BV([a,b])BV([a, b]) is the set of functions f ⁣:[a,b]→ℝf \colon [a, b] \to \R of bounded variation, with pointwise operations. Its norm is ∥f∥BV=∣f(a)∣+Vab(f),\norm{f}_{BV} = \abs{f(a)} + V_a^b(f), where Vab(f)V_a^b(f) is the total variation of ff on [a,b][a, b].

Remarks

This is a normed space. The variation is subadditive and Vab(tf)=∣t∣Vab(f)V_a^b(t f) = \abs{t} V_a^b(f), which gives the triangle inequality and homogeneity. If ∥f∥BV=0\norm{f}_{BV} = 0, then Vab(f)=0V_a^b(f) = 0, so ff is constant, and f(a)=0f(a) = 0 gives f=0f = 0. The space is complete, so it is a Banach space.

Example: f(x)=xf(x) = x on [0,1][0, 1]. It is increasing, so V01(f)=f(1)−f(0)=1V_0^1(f) = f(1) - f(0) = 1 and ∥f∥BV=0+1=1\norm{f}_{BV} = 0 + 1 = 1.

Non-example: f(x)=xsin⁡(1/x)f(x) = x \sin(1/x) for 0<x≤10 < x \le 1, with f(0)=0f(0) = 0. It is continuous on [0,1][0, 1], but its total variation is infinite, so it is not in BV([0,1])BV([0, 1]).

An equivalent norm is sup⁡x∣f(x)∣+Vab(f)\sup_{x} \abs{f(x)} + V_a^b(f).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
