Space of solutions of a linear recurrence

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, and let EE be a linear recurrence with constant coefficients over RR of order dd. The space of solutions of EE is the set of all solutions of EE. It is a submodule of the RR-module RNR^{\mathbb{N}} of all sequences in RR, with termwise addition and scalar multiplication.

Remarks

The map u↦(u0,…,ud−1)u \mapsto (u_0, \dots, u_{d-1}) is an isomorphism of RR-modules from the space of solutions to RdR^d. Over a field, the space of solutions has dimension dd. For the Fibonacci recurrence over R\mathbb{R}, the sequences φn\varphi^n and ψn\psi^n form a basis, with φ\varphi and ψ\psi the roots of X2−X−1X^2 - X - 1.

Explanations

L1 human

If two sequences solve the same linear recurrence, then so does their sum, and so does any multiple of one of them. So the solutions form a vector space, and the first dd terms are coordinates on it.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
