Specialization preorder
Builds on Topological spaceClosurePreorder
Definition
Let be a topological space. For , write for the closure of . The specialization preorder on is the relation defined by
Remarks
The relation is a preorder: , and if and then , so . Equivalently, if and only if every open set that contains also contains .
The preorder is antisymmetric, hence a partial order, if and only if is a T0 space. It is the equality relation if and only if every point of is closed, that is, is T1. Every continuous map is monotone for the specialization preorders.
Example: in the spectrum of a commutative ring with the Zariski topology, the closure of a prime is the set of primes that contain . So holds exactly when .
Non-example: on with the indiscrete topology, and but . So the specialization preorder is not a partial order, and indeed is not T0.
Some authors use the opposite convention, with when .
