Spectral radius
Definition
Let be an complex square matrix, and let be its spectrum, the set of its eigenvalues. The spectral radius of is
Remarks
Example: has characteristic polynomial , so and .
The spectral radius is not a norm on matrices. For , the only eigenvalue is , so although .
For every operator norm , , and Gelfand's formula gives . The powers tend to if and only if . For a normal matrix, equals the operator norm induced by the Euclidean norm. The same definition applies to a linear map of a finite-dimensional complex vector space.
