Definition
Let be the standard -form of on , and let be the Hodge star of . The Cayley -form on is . The group is identified with the group of linear maps with . It is a compact Lie group of dimension contained in .
Let be a connected Riemannian manifold of dimension . Identify the tangent space at a point with by a suitable linear isomorphism. The manifold is a Spin(7)-manifold if its holonomy group is then contained in .
Remarks
Equivalently, carries a -form that agrees with at each point in suitable linear coordinates and is parallel for the Levi-Civita connection; such a determines .
Example: with , whose constant coefficients make it parallel. If is a manifold, then with is a Spin(7)-manifold, with holonomy contained in .
Non-example: the round sphere is not a Spin(7)-manifold, since a metric with holonomy in is Ricci-flat and the round metric is not.
Compact manifolds with holonomy exactly were first constructed by Joyce.
