Split exact sequence
Definition
Let be an abelian category and let be a short exact sequence in . Let be the biproduct of and , with inclusion and projection . The sequence is split if there is an isomorphism with and .
Remarks
Equivalently, there is a morphism with , or there is a morphism with . Every additive functor sends a split exact sequence to a split exact sequence.
Example: , with and , is split. Take to be the identity of ; then and .
Non-example: is short exact but not split. A split sequence would give an isomorphism , but has no nonzero element of finite order.
