Definition
Let be a field and let be a central simple algebra over of degree . Let be a field extension of . The field is a splitting field of , or splits , if there is an isomorphism of -algebras Here is the tensor product of algebras and is the matrix ring of matrices over .
Remarks
Example: splits over . Indeed, is central simple of dimension over , and the only such algebra is , since is algebraically closed.
Non-example: itself does not split , since is a division algebra and has zero divisors.
is split over itself exactly when . An algebraic closure of splits every central simple algebra over , and so does a suitable finite Galois extension of . Every maximal subfield of a central division algebra is a splitting field of .
