Square root of a matrix
Builds on Square matrixMatrix multiplication
Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be an matrix over . A square root of is an matrix over such that , where is the matrix product.
Remarks
Example: for every real , is a square root of . Check: the entries of are on the diagonal and off it. Non-example: has no square root. If , then , so is nilpotent; a nilpotent matrix satisfies . A positive semidefinite matrix has a unique positive semidefinite square root, written ; see square root of a positive semidefinite matrix. A complex matrix with no eigenvalue in has a unique square root whose eigenvalues have positive real part, the principal square root.
