Standard part function

Definition
Let be a field of hyperreal numbers containing the real numbers. A hyperreal is finite if for some real . For each finite there is exactly one real number such that is infinitesimal. This is the standard part of , written . The standard part function is the map from the set of finite hyperreals to .
Remarks
Existence: is the supremum of the set , which is nonempty and bounded above when is finite. Uniqueness: if and are infinitesimal for reals and , then is a real infinitesimal, so .
Example: for a positive infinitesimal , , since is infinitesimal.
Non-example: is not finite, and for every real the difference is larger than , so it is not infinitesimal and has no standard part.
The finite hyperreals form a subring of , and is a ring homomorphism onto whose kernel is the set of infinitesimals. It is also monotone: implies .
