Definition
Let be a field and let . Let be a simplicial complex on the vertex set . So is a family of subsets of such that every subset of a member is a member. For , let in the polynomial ring . The Stanley–Reisner ideal of is The Stanley–Reisner ring, or face ring, of is the quotient ring .
Remarks
The ideal is already generated by the for the minimal non-faces . It is a squarefree monomial ideal, and is a bijection from simplicial complexes on to squarefree monomial ideals of . The Krull dimension of is , the largest size of a face.
Example: let be the boundary of a triangle, with faces all subsets of except . The only non-face is , so and , of Krull dimension .
Non-example: the ideal of is a monomial ideal, but it is not of the form , because it is not generated by squarefree monomials. Its quotient ring has the nonzero nilpotent element , while every is reduced.
