Star-free language

Builds on AlphabetFormal language

Definition

Let Σ\Sigma be an alphabet. The class of star-free languages over Σ\Sigma is the smallest class 𝒮\mathcal{S} of formal languages over Σ\Sigma such that:

  1. ∅∈𝒮\emptyset \in \mathcal{S}, {ε}∈𝒮\set{\varepsilon} \in \mathcal{S}, and {a}∈𝒮\set{a} \in \mathcal{S} for every a∈Σa \in \Sigma;
  2. if K,L∈𝒮K, L \in \mathcal{S}, then K∪L∈𝒮K \cup L \in \mathcal{S} and KL={uv:u∈K, v∈L}∈𝒮KL = \set{uv : u \in K,\ v \in L} \in \mathcal{S};
  3. if L∈𝒮L \in \mathcal{S}, then the complement Σ∗∖L∈𝒮\Sigma^* \setminus L \in \mathcal{S}.

Remarks

Example: over Σ={a,b}\Sigma = \set{a, b}, the language (ab)∗(ab)^* is star-free, because (ab)∗=Σ∗∖(bΣ∗∪Σ∗a∪Σ∗aaΣ∗∪Σ∗bbΣ∗),(ab)^* = \Sigma^* \setminus \left( b \Sigma^* \cup \Sigma^* a \cup \Sigma^* aa \Sigma^* \cup \Sigma^* bb \Sigma^* \right), where Σ∗=Σ∗∖∅\Sigma^* = \Sigma^* \setminus \emptyset is star-free by clauses 1 and 3. Indeed, take a nonempty word that does not start with bb, does not end with aa and contains neither aaaa nor bbbb. It alternates aa and bb, starting with aa and ending with bb. Non-example: over {a}\set{a}, the language (aa)∗(aa)^* is regular but not star-free; it cannot be produced by the clauses, as shown by its syntactic monoid ℤ/2ℤ\Z/2\Z, which is not aperiodic. Every star-free language is regular, since the clauses only use operations under which regular languages are closed.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
