Definition
Let be the Hamiltonian of a quantum system with Hilbert space , and let . A stationary state is a pure state whose unit vector is an eigenvector of : for some , the energy of the state.
Remarks
The time evolution of a stationary state is . So stays on the ray of in the projective Hilbert space, and every probability and expectation value is constant in time. The equation is the time-independent Schrödinger equation.
Example: let and on , the harmonic oscillator. For one has , so . So is a stationary state with energy .
Non-example: with the same , let , a stationary state with energy , and . Then , and the relative phase changes with . So leaves the ray of , and is not an eigenvector of .
