Steenrod algebra
Definition
Consider symbols of degree , for . The mod Steenrod algebra is the graded associative algebra over generated by them, subject to these relations.
- .
- The Adem relations hold: where the binomial coefficients are taken modulo .
Remarks
The algebra acts on the mod cohomology of every space, with acting as the Steenrod square of the same name. It is isomorphic to the algebra of all stable cohomology operations on mod cohomology.
Example: for , the sum has the single term with coefficient , so . For and , the coefficient is , so . Thus is not needed as a generator; the algebra is generated by the , .
Non-example: the free associative algebra over on the symbols is not the Steenrod algebra, since in it .
A basis of as a vector space is given by the admissible monomials with for all and , together with .
