Definition
Write for singular cohomology of a pair of spaces with coefficients in . The Steenrod squares are the cohomology operations defined for all pairs , that satisfy:
- Naturality: for every map of pairs .
- Additivity: .
- Cartan formula: , with the cup product.
- Stability: commutes with the connecting homomorphism .
- is the identity.
- If has degree , then , and for .
There is exactly one family of operations with these properties.
Remarks
The total square is ; on each class only finitely many terms are nonzero. The square is the Bockstein homomorphism of the sequence .
Example: in with , one has by clauses 5 and 6. By the Cartan formula, , so . For instance and .
Non-example: the family with and for all satisfies clauses 1 to 5 but fails clause 6, since would be instead of in .
