Steinberg symbol

Definition
Let be a field, let be its group of units, and let be an abelian group written multiplicatively. A Steinberg symbol on with values in is a map such that:
- for all .
- for all .
- for all with and .
Remarks
Every Steinberg symbol also satisfies and for all .
Example: on , let if and , and otherwise; this is the real Hilbert symbol. It is multiplicative in each variable, since for fixed it is the sign of , and for fixed it is constant. For the numbers and are never both negative, so clause 3 holds.
Non-example: on , let be the -adic valuation and . Clauses 1 and 2 hold because is additive. Clause 3 fails: for also , and .
The symbols in form the universal Steinberg symbol, by Matsumoto's theorem.
