Definition
Consider real vector bundles over paracompact spaces . The Stiefel–Whitney classes are the characteristic classes , , in singular cohomology, that satisfy the following axioms. Write for the total class.
- , and for greater than the rank of .
- Naturality: for every continuous map , and isomorphic bundles have equal classes.
- Whitney product formula: for the Whitney sum of two bundles over the same base, where is the cup product.
- Normalization: for the tautological line bundle over , is the generator of .
There is exactly one family of classes with these properties.
Remarks
Example: a trivial bundle is pulled back from a point, so by axiom 2 its total class is . For the tangent bundle of , one has , where generates ; for this gives .
Non-example: the rule for every bundle satisfies axioms 1 to 3 but fails axiom 4.
A bundle is orientable exactly when . An orientable bundle admits a spin structure exactly when also . For a smooth manifold , one writes .
