Functional analysis C*-algebras Theorem

Stinespring dilation theorem

Builds on Completely positive mapHilbert space

Statement

Let AA be a unital C*-algebra, let HH be a Hilbert space, and let B(H)B(H) be the C*-algebra of bounded operators on HH. Let φ ⁣:A→B(H)\varphi \colon A \to B(H) be a completely positive map. Then there exist a Hilbert space KK, a unital ∗*-homomorphism π ⁣:A→B(K)\pi \colon A \to B(K), and a bounded operator V ⁣:H→KV \colon H \to K such that φ(a)=V∗π(a)Vfor all a∈A.\varphi(a) = V^* \pi(a) V \quad \text{for all } a \in A. Moreover ∥φ∥=∥V∥2=∥φ(1)∥\norm{\varphi} = \norm{V}^2 = \norm{\varphi(1)}.

Remarks

Proof idea: on the algebraic tensor product A⊙HA \odot H define ⟨a⊗ξ,b⊗η⟩=⟨φ(b∗a)ξ,η⟩.\ip{a \otimes \xi}{b \otimes \eta} = \ip{\varphi(b^* a) \xi}{\eta}. Complete positivity of φ\varphi is exactly what makes this sesquilinear form positive semidefinite. Let KK be the completion of the quotient by the null vectors, let π(a)\pi(a) act by left multiplication, and let VξV \xi be the class of 1⊗ξ1 \otimes \xi.

The converse holds: every map of the form a↦V∗π(a)Va \mapsto V^* \pi(a) V is completely positive. If φ(1)=1\varphi(1) = 1, then VV is an isometry and HH can be viewed as a subspace of KK, so φ\varphi is the compression of π\pi to HH. One can choose KK minimal, meaning that the vectors π(a)Vξ\pi(a) V \xi span a dense subspace; the minimal dilation is unique up to unitary equivalence.

Example: for H=ℂH = \C, a completely positive map A→ℂA \to \C with φ(1)=1\varphi(1) = 1 is a state, and the theorem gives φ(a)=⟨π(a)ξ,ξ⟩\varphi(a) = \ip{\pi(a) \xi}{\xi} for a unit vector ξ=V1\xi = V 1; this is the Gelfand–Naimark–Segal construction.

For a student

In quantum information, the theorem says that every quantum channel comes from a unitary interaction with an environment followed by discarding the environment. For finite-dimensional algebras it is equivalent to the Kraus form of Choi's theorem. It is a basic tool in the theory of operator systems and operator spaces.
