Definition

Let XX and YY be real random variables, not necessarily on the same probability space. XX is smaller than YY in the usual stochastic order, written X≤stYX \le_{\mathrm{st}} Y, if P(X>t)≤P(Y>t)for all t∈ℝ.P(X > t) \le P(Y > t) \qquad \text{for all } t \in \R.

Remarks

In terms of distribution functions, X≤stYX \le_{\mathrm{st}} Y means FX(t)≥FY(t)F_X(t) \ge F_Y(t) for all tt. It is equivalent to E[u(X)]≤E[u(Y)]E[u(X)] \le E[u(Y)] for every nondecreasing function u ⁣:ℝ→ℝu \colon \R \to \R for which both expectations exist. It is also equivalent to the existence of a coupling (X′,Y′)(X', Y') with X′X' distributed as XX, Y′Y' distributed as YY and X′≤Y′X' \le Y' almost surely. One can take X′=FX−1(U)X' = F_X^{-1}(U) and Y′=FY−1(U)Y' = F_Y^{-1}(U) for UU uniform on (0,1)(0, 1), where F−1F^{-1} is the quantile function. The relation depends only on the laws, and it is a partial order on the probability measures on ℝ\R. If X≤stYX \le_{\mathrm{st}} Y and E[X]=E[Y]E[X] = E[Y] is finite, then XX and YY have the same law. Example: if XX is exponential with rate λ\lambda and YY is exponential with rate λ′≤λ\lambda' \le \lambda, then P(X>t)=e−λt≤e−λ′t=P(Y>t)P(X > t) = e^{-\lambda t} \le e^{-\lambda' t} = P(Y > t) for t≥0t \ge 0, and both sides are 11 for t<0t < 0; so X≤stYX \le_{\mathrm{st}} Y. Non-example: if XX is normal with mean 00 and variance 11 and YY is normal with mean 00 and variance 44, then P(X>1)<P(Y>1)P(X > 1) < P(Y > 1) but P(X>−1)>P(Y>−1)P(X > -1) > P(Y > -1), so neither X≤stYX \le_{\mathrm{st}} Y nor Y≤stXY \le_{\mathrm{st}} X. The name stochastic ordering also covers other orders, such as the convex order (E[u(X)]≤E[u(Y)]E[u(X)] \le E[u(Y)] for convex uu) and the hazard rate and likelihood ratio orders.
