Definition
Let be a velocity field on a region of that is periodic in with period . Write for the time average over one period. For a point , let be the path of the fluid particle with , that is , a pathline of the flow. The Eulerian mean velocity at is . The Lagrangian mean velocity is , the mean velocity of the particle in the Lagrangian description. The Stokes drift velocity at is
Remarks
For a small oscillation, expand with ; this gives the standard approximation . Example: take the linear deep-water wave with surface and . Its Eulerian mean velocity below the troughs is zero, while the approximation gives the horizontal drift at depth . So the drift is of second order in the amplitude and decays twice as fast with depth as the wave motion. A spatially uniform oscillation has zero Stokes drift, since the particle sees the same velocity as the fixed point; drift needs a velocity that varies in space. Non-example: the field is not periodic in , so the averages above, and the Stokes drift, are not defined for it.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
