Definition
Let be a topological space. A Stone–Čech compactification of is a pair with the following properties.
- is a compact Hausdorff space.
- is a continuous map.
- For every compact Hausdorff space and every continuous map , there is a unique continuous map with .
Remarks
Such a pair exists for every and is unique up to a unique homeomorphism compatible with . The map is an embedding with dense image exactly when is a Tychonoff space. Then is a compactification of .
Example: if is compact Hausdorff, then with the identity. For a continuous , the map is the required extension, and it is unique.
Non-example: the one-point compactification of is not . The map , , has no continuous extension. An extension would need and .
