Definition
Let and be Banach spaces, and let be a bounded linear map. The map is strictly singular if for every infinite-dimensional closed subspace of , Equivalently, no restriction to an infinite-dimensional closed subspace is an isomorphism onto its image.
Remarks
Example: every compact operator is strictly singular. Indeed, suppose that had a bounded inverse on . Then the closed unit ball of would be the image of a relatively compact set under a bounded map, so it would be compact, and would be finite-dimensional. For , the inclusion is strictly singular but not compact. Non-example: the identity map of an infinite-dimensional Banach space is not strictly singular, since it is an isomorphism on . On Hilbert spaces, the strictly singular operators are exactly the compact operators. For a Banach space , the strictly singular operators from to form a closed two-sided ideal of the algebra of bounded operators. If is a Fredholm operator and is strictly singular, then is Fredholm with the same index.
