Strong dual space
Builds on Continuous dual spacevon Neumann bounded setTopology generated by a family of seminorms
Definition
Let be or , let be a topological vector space over , and let be its continuous dual space. For each von Neumann bounded set , put for . The strong dual space of is with the topology generated by the seminorms , for all bounded subsets of .
Remarks
Each is finite, because a continuous linear form maps bounded sets to bounded subsets of . A net converges to in if and only if uniformly on every bounded subset of . The topology is also written . Example: let be a normed space with closed unit ball . Every bounded set lies in some , and , so the strong dual topology is the topology of the dual norm. Non-example: for an infinite-dimensional Banach space , the weak-* topology uses only the finite sets . It is not the strong topology, since its neighbourhoods of are not norm bounded.
