Definition
Let be a signature: a set of function symbols, relation symbols and constant symbols. Each function symbol and each relation symbol has an arity . An -structure consists of the following data.
- A nonempty set , the domain or universe of .
- For each -ary function symbol of , a function , where is the Cartesian product of copies of .
- For each -ary relation symbol of , a subset .
- For each constant symbol of , an element .
The objects , and are the interpretations of the symbols in .
Remarks
Example: let with binary, unary and a constant. The integers with addition, negation and the number form an -structure, because each symbol receives a function of the right arity on or an element of .
Non-example: for the same signature, the natural numbers with do not form an -structure, because is not a function from to .
A structure is often written as a tuple, such as . Some authors, and the Mathlib library, allow the empty set as domain.
