Definition
Let be a connected smooth manifold with tangent bundle . A sub-Riemannian manifold is a triple such that:
- is a smooth subbundle, the horizontal distribution;
- is bracket-generating: at each , the vector fields tangent to and their iterated Lie brackets span ;
- assigns to each an inner product on the fibre , depending smoothly on .
A horizontal curve is an absolutely continuous curve with for almost every . The sub-Riemannian distance is the infimum of over the horizontal curves from to .
Remarks
Example: the Heisenberg group is with spanned by and , with orthonormal. Here , so span at each point, and clause 2 holds.
Non-example: on , let be spanned by and . All brackets of fields tangent to stay in , so clause 2 fails; horizontal curves stay in the planes , and points with different are at infinite distance.
When , the definition gives a Riemannian manifold. Some authors do not require clause 2 in the definition and add it as a hypothesis when needed.
