statement proposition

Subgroups of index two are normal

Statement

Let GG be a group and let HH be a subgroup of GG of index 22. Then HH is normal in GG.

Remarks

For g∉Hg \notin H, the left cosets are HH and gH=G∖HgH = G \setminus H, and the right cosets are HH and Hg=G∖HHg = G \setminus H. Thus gH=HggH = Hg for each g∈Gg \in G, and the coset criterion applies. For example, the alternating group AnA_n has index 22 in the symmetric group SnS_n, and thus it is normal.

Explanations

L1 human

When a subgroup has only two cosets, one coset is the subgroup and the other is everything else. This is true for the left cosets and for the right cosets. So the left and right cosets agree, and the subgroup is normal.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
