Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension , and let . A subset is an embedded submanifold of dimension if the following holds. For every point there is a chart of the smooth atlas of with such that Such a chart is a slice chart for . The restrictions of the slice charts give a unique smooth structure for which the inclusion is a smooth embedding.
Remarks
Example: the unit circle is an embedded submanifold of dimension . Near a point with , the chart on sends the circle onto the axis ; the other points are handled in the same way. Non-example: the cross is not an embedded submanifold. Removing the origin from a small connected neighbourhood of in leaves four components. Removing a point from an open interval leaves two, so no slice chart exists at the origin. The embedded submanifolds of are exactly the images of smooth embeddings into . An immersed submanifold is the image of an injective immersion , with the topology and smooth structure carried over from ; its topology may be finer than the subspace topology.
