Submodule

Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity element and let MM be a left module over RR. A submodule of MM is a subset N⊆MN \subseteq M such that:

  1. NN is a subgroup of the abelian group (M,+)(M, +).
  2. rx∈Nrx \in N for all r∈Rr \in R and x∈Nx \in N.

Remarks

A submodule is a module over RR with the restricted operations. The submodules of RR, as a left module over itself, are the left ideals of RR. The Z\Z-submodules of an abelian group are its subgroups, and over a field the submodules are the subspaces. Intersections and sums of submodules are submodules.

Explanations

L1 human

A submodule is a module inside a bigger module. It contains the sums and the scalar multiples of its elements. For example, the even integers are a submodule of Z\Z over Z\Z.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
