Subnormal subgroup
Builds on SubgroupNormal subgroup
Definition
Let be a group and let be a subgroup of . The subgroup is subnormal in when there are subgroups of with these properties. First, and . Second, is a normal subgroup of for . In symbols, .
Remarks
One writes . The least such is the defect of in ; the subgroups of defect at most are the normal subgroups. Example: in the alternating group , let and . Then because is abelian, and , so is subnormal of defect ; it is not normal, since conjugation by sends to . Non-example: in the symmetric group , the subgroup is not subnormal. The only subgroups of that contain are and . So a chain from to must contain a step , but is not normal in . In a nilpotent group every subgroup is subnormal.
