Sum-free set
Builds on Abelian groupSumset
Definition
Let be an abelian group written additively, and let be a subset of . The set is sum-free if there are no , not necessarily distinct, with .
Remarks
Equivalently, , where is the sumset. The set of odd integers is sum-free in : if and are odd, then is even, so it is not in the set. The set is not sum-free: with one gets , and repeated elements are allowed. For a positive integer , the upper half of is sum-free, since any sum of two of its elements exceeds . The set is never sum-free, since ; so a sum-free subset of a group does not contain .
