Combinatorics Theorem

Sum of the first n odd positive integers

Builds on Mathematical induction

Statement

Let nn be a positive integer. Then the nn smallest odd positive integers add up to the square of nn: 1+3+5+⋯+(2n−1)=∑i=1n(2i−1)=n2.1 + 3 + 5 + \dots + (2n - 1) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (2i - 1) = n^2.

Remarks

For n=1,2,3,4n = 1, 2, 3, 4 the sums are 1,4,9,161, 4, 9, 16. A proof by induction uses n2+(2n+1)=(n+1)2n^2 + (2n + 1) = (n + 1)^2.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
