Definition

Let GG be a topological group whose group operation ++ is commutative. Let II be a set, and let (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} be a family of elements of GG. For a finite subset F⊆IF \subseteq I write sF=∑i∈Fxis_F = \sum_{i \in F} x_i. The family is summable with sum s∈Gs \in G if the following holds. For every neighbourhood UU of ss there is a finite set F0⊆IF_0 \subseteq I with sF∈Us_F \in U for every finite FF with F0⊆F⊆IF_0 \subseteq F \subseteq I. Then one writes ∑i∈Ixi=s\sum_{i \in I} x_i = s.

Remarks

Equivalently, the net (sF)(s_F), indexed by the finite subsets of II ordered by inclusion, converges to ss. If GG is Hausdorff, a family has at most one sum; in Mathlib this is HasSum.unique. The definition does not use any order on II, so a bijection σ ⁣:I→I\sigma \colon I \to I does not change summability or the sum.

Example: in ℝ\R, the family (2−n)n≥0(2^{-n})_{n \ge 0} has sum 22. For U⊇(2−ε,2+ε)U \supseteq (2 - \varepsilon, 2 + \varepsilon) choose NN with 2−N<ε2^{-N} < \varepsilon and F0={0,…,N}F_0 = \set{0, \dots, N}. For finite F⊇F0F \supseteq F_0 one has 2−2−N≤sF<22 - 2^{-N} \le s_F < 2, so sF∈Us_F \in U.

Non-example: in ℝ\R, the family ((−1)n+1/n)n≥1((-1)^{n+1}/n)_{n \ge 1} is not summable. For any finite F0F_0, adding finitely many odd nn beyond F0F_0 to F0F_0 makes sFs_F as large as one likes, because ∑n odd1/n\sum_{n \text{ odd}} 1/n diverges.

In ℝ\R and ℂ\C, a family indexed by ℕ\N is summable if and only if it is absolutely convergent, and then the sum equals the sum of the series.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
