Sunflower lemma

Builds on Family of setsIntersection

Statement

A sunflower with pp petals is a family of pp distinct sets S1,…,SpS_1, \ldots, S_p whose pairwise intersections are all equal. That is, there is a set YY, the core, with Si∩Sj=YS_i \cap S_j = Y for all i≠ji \ne j. Let k≥1k \ge 1 and p≥1p \ge 1 be integers. Let ℱ\mathcal{F} be a family of sets, each with exactly kk elements, such that ∣ℱ∣>k! (p−1)k|\mathcal{F}| > k! \, (p - 1)^k. Then ℱ\mathcal{F} contains a sunflower with pp petals.

Remarks

The proof is by induction on kk. Take a maximal subfamily of pairwise disjoint sets. If it has at least pp members, they form a sunflower with empty core. Otherwise their union UU has at most (p−1)k(p - 1) k elements and meets every set of ℱ\mathcal{F}, so some x∈Ux \in U lies in more than (k−1)! (p−1)k−1(k-1)! \, (p-1)^{k-1} sets. Remove xx from these sets and apply the induction hypothesis to get a sunflower, then add xx back to its core.

Example: for k=1k = 1 and p=3p = 3, a family of 33 distinct one-element sets is a sunflower with empty core, and 3>1!⋅213 > 1! \cdot 2^1. The result is due to Erdős and Rado, who conjectured that k! (p−1)kk! \, (p-1)^k can be replaced by CpkC_p^k for a constant CpC_p that depends only on pp; this is open. In 2019 Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang improved the bound to (Cplog⁡klog⁡log⁡k)k(C p \log k \log \log k)^k for an absolute constant CC, and later work lowered it to (Cplog⁡k)k(C p \log k)^k.

For a student

The sunflower lemma is a basic tool in extremal set theory and in theoretical computer science, for example in lower bounds for monotone circuits. Its proof is a typical Ramsey-type argument: either many sets are disjoint, or many share an element, and then one recurses. It belongs to the circle of results of Ramsey theory, where a large structure always contains an orderly part.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
