Superstring theory
Definition
A superstring theory is a string theory in which the worldsheet theory has supersymmetry. In the Ramond–Neveu–Schwarz formulation, the worldsheet fields are the following.
- Bosonic fields , , which give the embedding of the worldsheet into spacetime, as in the Polyakov action.
- Fermionic fields , two-dimensional Majorana spinors on the worldsheet with one spacetime vector index.
- A local worldsheet supersymmetry that exchanges and .
The quantum theory is consistent, free of anomalies, only for . A projection of the spectrum, the GSO projection, removes the tachyon and makes the spacetime spectrum supersymmetric.
Remarks
The five consistent superstring theories in ten dimensions are type I, type IIA, type IIB, heterotic and heterotic . Example: the type IIB theory is a superstring theory of closed oriented strings; its massless spectrum is that of type IIB supergravity. Non-example: the bosonic string theory, with only the fields , fails clause 2; it is consistent in and its spectrum has a tachyon and no fermions. An equivalent formulation, the Green–Schwarz formalism, makes spacetime supersymmetry manifest instead of worldsheet supersymmetry.
